Ever since our Omeka lab some weeks ago, I have wanted to note a few more details down for those of who you want to continue on with the platform. This is especially meant for students using Omeka for a final project.
Publishing. Until you set items, collections, exhibits, etc. to “published” status, only you can see them. Make sure your whole site is public! You can test what an anonymous visitor to your site would see by setting your browser to “Private” or “Incognito” mode.
Hyperlinks. When you are creating Dublic Core metadata, pretty much any metadata field can include a clickable link. But you have to enter the link using HTML code. A link looks like this:
<a href="https://dc22.andrewgoldstone.com">Data & Culture</a>
The result is:
The link destination is the href attribute, and the test of the link goes between the <a>...</a> tags.
Exhibits. For most projects, the best way to synthesize the data you are gathering and allow your site to tell a story will be with one or more Exhibits. Please carefully read the documentation on Exhibit Builder, which guides you through the steps of creating a sequence of pages on your Omeka site incorporating items as well as text.
Synthesis. The final project assignment asks you to include an extended interpretive discussion of at least 1000 words on your site. By this we mean that you should write at some length about the site as an interpretation of its source materials: what it can do, what its limitations turn out to be, why you made the choices you did. A natural way to do this is to create a lengthy About page, using the Simple Pages plugin: follow the documentation on Simple Pages. But you could also incorporate the text into an exhibit.
Intellectual property. We do not want your work to be excessively hindered by questions about the rights to images or files you find online, and when it comes to the Dublin Core fields related to copyright, it is okay to leave these blank. Nonetheless, you should not misappropriate things you clearly should not copy into your own website. If in doubt, provide a link and description without copying. And, to be sure, what you present as your own work must be your own.
